With the season of Lent upon us Christians, I thought this blog would be apropos. The title of this blog is a play on a phrase that is very popular in a game show wherein the emcee beckons the contestants down with his phrase, “Come on down!!!”
Well, in this case, the call is, “Come on back!” And in this case, the emcee is the church beckoning everyone back, both saints and sinners.
You may say, “I have not been to church in years, my life hasn’t been filled with decency, I have wronged many people and I am beyond saving.” Well, let’s set the record straight once and for all. You are wanted back! Do not take my word for it. We all know that Jesus was hung on the cross as a payment for the sins of mankind. Read verses 21 and 22 in the third chapter of the Gospel of John.
The setting: The Apostles and disciples are sitting around days after the crucifixion. They are scared and afraid of being caught. Lo and behold! Jesus appears to them and says, “Peace be with you,” and “As the Father sent me, I send you. Whose sins you shall forgive are forgiven, whose sins you shall retain are retained.”
Note that Jesus did not put any limitations on the types of sins that would be forgiven. So what if you have been away from the church? So what if your life has not been filled with decency? And so what if you have wronged many people? Jesus wants you back. And what better time is there to come back than during the season of Lent?
So as the beckoning call says…Come on back!!!
